MoHP to double docs strength in five years

Over the next five years, the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) will increase the number of doctors in government hospitals from 1,250 to between 2,500 to 3,000 under the Nepal Health Sector Programme-Implementation Plan II (NHSP-IP2/ 2010-2015) that began July 15 last year.

“MoHP has finalised the proposal to recruit 150 doctors whereas discussion is still underway on how many nurses and paramedics should be recruited. Once we finalise the number of nurses and paramedics, we will forward it to the Ministry of General Administration and Ministry of Finance,” said Kabiraj Khanal, joint spokesperson at MoHP.

The government has approved the recruitment of nearly 1,250 new staff, including auxiliary nurses, midwives and health assistants along with the upgrade of 522 sub-health posts to health posts across the country this year. “This will increase public access and provide quality service to the increasing population, as envisioned in the Interim Constitution 2006,” said Khanal.

According to MoHP’s statistics, of the total 1,062 sanctioned government posts across the country 246 posts of doctors are lying vacant. Of the 5,935 nursing staff posts, 628 posts are vacant while among 10,642 paramedics’ posts 1430 posts are vacant. Government hospitals in rural areas are mostly bereft of staff as most of the doctors, nurses and paramedics are located in Kathmandu Valley.

There are 9,000 registered doctors but 5,000 of them have left the country. More than 3,000 of the remaining are in the private sector. Thus, there are just 900 doctors in government health institutions, according to Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha, General Secretary of Nepal Medical Association.

“We have long been raising the issue of doctors’ posting. MoHP’s exercise to create new post is a welcoming step,” added Jha.

“The population was around 17.5 million in 1991, and the number of doctors then was the same as it is now. Now, the population has reached 26.5 million. Therefore, the government ought to create doctors’ posts to increase people’s access to health services at affordable rates.”
